A former member of the Guild of Railway Artists, Gerald had no formal art training! He developed from “steam, trucks and rock and roll” to become a professional artist in 1968. He aimed to simply present an illustration of a scene before colour photography. Gerald’s speciality is the field of early railway history and the pre grouping period in particular LMS and GWR. He has firm views on art and railways, he was born in the black country, the heart of England. He believes the craftsmanship of traditional art around the turn of the century has never been surpassed. He sees railways as a romantic extension, in a unique period of history that, through its social and commercial need was, in concept, altruistic. The steam engine: fire, water and air was such a demonstration of elemental control, enabling it to blend with nature and humanity on a spiritual and heroic scale. Gerald also has a love of pre-mechanised agriculture. His passion for the Shropshire countryside combined with many visits to Acton Scott Heritage Farm where Victorian ways of farming are still practised have inspired many paintings with some of those agricultural elements added to his railway work. |
